Best Beginner Smokers [2022]

What does a beginner smoker mean? It meas an easy to deal with smoker suitable for people, who are trying to learn how to smoke different kinds of food. When it comes to a delicious dinner, hardly anybody can resist a homemade smoked brisket, fish, or vegetables. It is so simple and tastes amazing. People try to find the best solution for cooking purposes, and choosing a smoker for beginners isn’t an easy thing to do, as there are so many options today. Trying to help you out with this dilemma. Here are some best smokers for you.

You can be lost in the variety of smokers nowadays, as they can be: propane/gas smokers, electric, charcoal, offset, pellet, kamado grill, kettle grills.

How about a pellet smoker?

It’s your standard grill except it takes all the work out of it. We got the hopper on one end, you put your pellets and it feeds it with the auger.  It’s got a fire in it just like a normal grill just a lot smaller, so instead of burning traditional charcoal or wood, a pellet grill works off condensed wood pellets. These pellets have been pressed, so they burn super efficiently. Now every pellet grill no matter what the model, is going to have some type of auger, which moves the pellets from the hopper to the firepot, and the firepot is where all the action is. You do have to have electricity for a pellet grill to work because that’s what moves the auger, it’s what controls the heating rod to get it going.

Every pellet grill has a diverter of some type. This is what channels the grease down to the grease drain, but it also keeps the heat from being directly under your meat and throws it up on the sides. That’s what helps control the temperature.

Underneath the diverter the action happens. There is a little heat shield over the firepot. There’s a little heating rod, the pellets are dropped in from the auger, the heating rod heats up, that gets them going, and then it shuts down, and it’s all controlled by the airflow and by the number of pellets that that auger drops into the pot.

The actual temperatures are controlled on pellet grills by a thermocouple, it usually comes in one of the firewalls. And this is what reads the air temperature telling the control unit that the grill needs more pellets or to quit spitting them out. The thermocouple is one of the most important parts of the grill. You don’t want to damage it, you don’t want to hit it with the grates. These grills come with a little protective sleeve when you first buy them just to help them during transportation, but you always want to take this off, because it will melt to the thermocouple, and you’ll get inaccurate readings. You’ll end up having to replace it. You can put all the pellets in the hopper. About 25 pounds is good for about 20 hours of cooking.

All pellets get channeled to the auger and of course, the auger takes them to the fireplace so you can see the auger down in the bottom. It simplifies cooking a good barbecue. Also, you’ve got this range of temperatures you can cook at. If you want to smoke some cheese low, keep the temperature down around to 165-170. Pellet grills have come a very long way since their early beginnings in the mid-eighties and that’s the stuff we’ll have a look at today.

1. Traeger Grills Pro Series 575 Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker

One of the best pellet smokers for beginners can be considered Traeger Grills Pro 575. It is a 6-in-one grill that offers smoking, baking, roasting, braising, and BBQ, and of course, grilling.

Size. 27 x 41 x 53 inches. Corded Electric.

Super simple Ignition.  It is simple to just press the button, set the temperature you want and your grill is lit and ready to rock in no time.

Easy to use. Set the temperature you want, and between the augur and the fan forced air the pellets are being laid out to a firepot exactly in the ratio that is needed to hit the temperature that you’re looking for and keep it there. You don’t have to tend or stoke the fire or any of that, the fan is doing the stoking, the augur is doing the fuel delivery.

Traeger 575 smoker might be considered one of the best beginner smokers, as you set the temperature only once and just pick up your food when it is ready.

Connected Home Technology.   Traeger Grills Pro Series 575 wood pellet grill and smoker has a feature of WiFIRE technology that allows you to connect via a phone app. It connects your grill to WiFi and the Traeger app allows you to control the grill from anywhere; Alexa technology allows you to do it all by voice. So, if you want to do something like a brisket smoke overnight without having to constantly babysit the fuel, it does all that for you with alerts and other things that it can send you. It keeps you involved in what’s going on outside while sleeping. You can control it from anywhere.

Even heat distribution. The force convective air comes from the fan that hits the firepot, which provides super even heat. Even though the rear rack in a pellet grill is not necessarily just a warming rack, it can be used as another cooking rack because the temperature between them is very close.

A great benefit that provides the heat baffle is fewer flare ups. Basically, your food drippings will hit the large diffusion pan and vaporize back in your food, and any of them that don’t do that will roll on down to the grease pot.

Best beginner electric smoker. Next up with a pellet grill smoker flavor will be on point. Instead of a learning curve for somebody who hasn’t always smoked food, a pellet grill, the way that it works, is a subtle smokiness, but it’s really hard to oversmoke your food, which can be pretty easy to do when you’re 1st learning how to smoke with a regular smoker, this might be one of the best starter smokers, as it eliminates that. This smoker makes it nice and easy for somebody who wants to learn how to smoke.

The pellets come in all of the common smoking flavors, so you can mix and match or make your own blend. It’s super simple and allows you access to all the common smoke flavors.

Temperature range. Modern pellet grills have a very wide and versatile temperature range. They’re no longer just smoker grills. Traeger smoker allows you to achieve 500 °F.

And the last advantage is that Traeger pellet smoker is extremely consistent, it is a lot like a home oven.

The Porcelain grill grates make cleanup a breeze.

2. Masterbuilt MB20071117 Digital Electric Smoker, 30″, Black

Considering which smoker to buy, you can’t miss checking the Masterbuilt electric smoker review. It is one of the best meat smokers for beginners.

Electric Smoker dimensions.  20.47″ W x 19.88″ L x 33.26″ H

Easy to use. If you’re getting your first smoker, a good starter smoker would be an electric smoker like this one. The reason is that it just makes it unbelievably easy to get really good results and on top of that it is not expensive. A standard electric smoker can give you better results than a pellet or charcoal one. It is very easy to use and it’s very cheap to operate. You can buy a huge bag of smoking chips, they come in cubic inches. They will last long.

Easy loading. The other reason why MB20071117 is a good smoker is that it is just a set and forget system. It is super easy to use.  You just set your temperature and put in your wood chips and if you’re doing a long smoke, this smoker has a patented side wood chip loading system. You have to pull out one little thing on the side, put wood chips in, put it back in, and turn it upside down. It dumps the wood chips into the heating element, so you don’t have to unlock and open up your smoker. That lets all the heat out and lets all the smoke out as well. When you do that and you let all the heat out you kill about a half hour’s worth of cooking time but for briskets, ribs, chicken, turkey, sausages, fruits, jerky etc. Electric smokers and more specifically this Masterbuilt one just works unbelievably good and it’s so super easy to use.

Good quality. Masterbuilt MB20071117 smoker is of good quality. It has a fully insulated body that retains heat very well.

4. Bradley Smoker Digital 4-Rack Electric Outdoor BBQ Smoker, Vertical Food Smoker

Bradley Smoker is one of the best offset smokers under 1000.

Size. 14 x 17 x 31 inches

Ultra-Convenient: Designed with dual heating elements that control smoke and temperature, it’s suitable for all types of smoking like hot smoking, cold smoking, and dehydrating.

Design. It is a cabinet-style smoker. This is a 4 rack Bradley smoker pretty much like btds76p. There is a vent on the top, a reflective tray, a little diffuser piece, that catches the drippings. There is also a pan and a bowl in which you put some water, that catches the coals when they’re done cooking.

Digital. Easy to maintain. This is a digital smoker and so there is a control unit. One nice thing about it is the fact that this control unit can pop off nicely and easily. That way you don’t have to leave it outside where it gets weathered, that might damage it. It can be pulled apart  really and put back together really quickly and easily and keep the control mechanism  out of the weather, so this just pops in on the side.

Bradley 4 rack digital smoker uses wooden biscuits. Each one of these biscuits smokes for 20 minutes, so you can load it up with just the right amount to smoke the meat. So that’s one of the nice things about this smoker as opposed to something like the triggers and some of the other drum styles.

Here you just have to set the time and temperature.

This smoker has a very small footprint. You can put it anywhere and it doesn’t take up a ton of space. It is very solid. It is big enough. You can do several racks of ribs and turkey or pork. It has got a good capability.

5. Traeger Grills Ranger Portable Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker, Black Small

Here is a Traeger portable grill review, if you are considering something of a smaller size than a regular smoker. Traeger Ranger portable grill can be used both as a grill and a smoker for beginners.

Size. 20 x 21 x 13 inches. It is not too big, so you can load it in the trunk of your car or the cab of your truck and take this ranger smoker camping, tailgating, whatever the case may be. But at the same time, it is not too small. This travel Traeger is just the right size.

Design. Traeger mini smoker has got a nice finish. It’s got the ribs on the top with the Traeger logo, nice black color, the brushed handle, which stays cool; latches on both sides to latch down the lid; there’s venting on the back as well as on the sides, so you don’t have to worry about any kind of smoke stack or anything like that.  It is louvered so that the holes are covered in case of rain. It is also equipped with a controller.

Temperature. 450 degrees max. The temperature is accurate and steady. It is very simple as far as the controls go.

Prime auger feature. If you hold the ignite button and the up button at the same time for a minute it’ll prime the auger by itself without having to turn on the fan.

Keeping warm. One more feature of the Traeger ranger is that it can keep a warm setting. You can cook something low and slow and then keep it warm at 165 degrees until you get ready to take it off or get ready to use it.

You don’t have to keep opening and closing the lid trying to check internal temperatures as it has a temperature probe.

The grates fit perfectly. It is a decent size for four pieces of small ribeye or maybe six burgers, a boneless pork slice, and a whole chicken. It comes with a Traeger cast iron griddle. Traeger portable smoker is just very easy to clean and maintain, so it can be considered a good starter smoker. It  doesn’t use a whole lot of pellets. There are no legs to have to argue with and fuss with tightening up the top.
